Get Ready! Coming February 1, 2012....

First thoughts:

At first glance you wouldn’t think much of this book, to me it seemed just like any other Young Adult book but I read it anyways, determined to read it to the end. And well from the first chapter I was hooked, I was surprised at the intensity it started out as; this author definitely didn’t hesitate to dig into the action. I liked the fact that even though there was a love triangle going on it didn’t bother me. It was like this love-triangle was different than all of the others. For one the love was definitely there but there were so many outside sources against the whole thing. And also the characters themselves didn’t seem to want to be in it, it was like their heart was in it but everything else screamed to get out. So I guess you can say that the love-triangle wasn’t some mundane run out idea but new in itself. One of the best assets this book has was the characters themselves. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read books and the characters were their downfall, the idea and description could be the most wonderful thing in the world but if the characters lack life the book isn’t worth the effort or energy. But this book was head on, the characters were full of life and fire. They transformed so much in this book especially the “Bad” boy Raven and even though he’s still the “Bad” boy we were able to see a side of him I assumed we wouldn’t get to see. Also the concept of the book was interesting, the concept of Halflings was intense and new, I will admit I’m not schooled on the history of Halflings but I do know a little and the fact that we were explained the history and how they came to be was excellent. This book lacked no detail to information, I felt that I wasn’t left confused; like the author explained her ideas clearly and if one part was left shady she would later in the book paint it in bright colorful colors. As for the description it was really good, she did the best on describing the characters themselves, all the vivid colors and angles were perfect. As for the plot it was good, there were a few places that were a little off to me but it didn’t take from the book. But by the end of the book I was wanting more, the last sentence was the most powerful line in the book to me; I really thought she summed up all that happened in the book with those few words. As for some issues I found in the book there were a few, the fact that the main character was a little off to me in the beginning don’t get me wrong she was definitely full of life but it was like she was contradicting herself, like she couldn’t make up her mind about certain things and I didn’t particularly enjoy that. Also I thought at times the pace was set too fast, like there weren’t enough down time. I always found things happening one after the other and though they were clearly explained I felt the characters didn’t have enough time to really grow. Where some transformed remarkably others were left behind, I would have loved to see more of Vine for instance. But in the end all of these things are trivial compared to the book as a whole.

Goodreads Summary:

After being inexplicably targeted by an evil intent on harming her at any cost, seventeen-year-old Nikki finds herself under the watchful guardianship of three mysterious young men who call themselves Halflings. Sworn to defend her, misfits Mace, Raven, and Vine battle to keep Nikki safe while hiding their deepest secret—and the wings that come with.

A growing attraction between Nikki and two of her protectors presents a whole other danger. While she risks a broken heart, Mace and Raven could lose everything, including their souls. As the mysteries behind the boys’ powers, as well as her role in a scientist’s dark plan, unfold, Nikki is faced with choices that will affect the future of an entire race of heavenly beings, as well as the precarious equilibrium of the earthly world.
Last thoughts:

I really enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. I wouldn’t recommend this to people who don’t enjoy a love triangle; even though this one is different I don’t think it’s really going to make you particularly happy. Also this isn’t for people who don’t like reading about angels and though this in no ways digs deep into the religion there are small parts mentioned. But I would recommend this if you’re willing to try something new, this definitely does have some fresh parts to this. I would also recommend this book if you enjoy a face paced action packed romance novel. This definitely has all the elements to make for an enjoyable read. I definitely will be continuing to read this series; it is yet another book that has left an imprint on my mind.
