I voluntarily read an ARC of Aftermath!

First Thoughts:

The first thing that came to my mind after reading the last word was; Wow. This was such a wonderful and awesome read. The first half really had me near tears while the last half was empowering. This dealt with a difficult topic while adding some action to keep the book moving. A lot happened and I'm still struggling to pick up the pieces. There were so many different emotions I felt while reading this book; so many feels. While there may have been some overly-dramatic moments, in the end it wowed me.

Goodreads Summary:

Three years after losing her brother Luka in a school shooting, Skye Gilchrist is moving home. But there's no sympathy for Skye and her family because Luka wasn't a victim; he was a shooter.

Jesse Mandal knows all too well that the scars of the past don't heal easily. The shooting cost Jesse his brother and his best friend--Skye.

Ripped apart by tragedy, Jesse and Skye can't resist reopening the mysteries of their past. But old wounds hide darker secrets. And the closer Skye and Jesse get to the truth of what happened that day, the closer they get to a new killer.

Plot:

This was about a sensitive subject but this book didn't really start until three years after the incident occurred. But in the beginning of the book there is a short moment of the day of the shooting itself, like when Skye learned of what happened. The book focused on showing us a victim of bullying and dangers of being a sister of someone who is supposedly dangerous. This was definitely a mystery thriller because someone was after Skye and things kept happening to keep the story flowing. This was such a fast paced book that I literally had a hard time putting it down. I stayed up past 3 am just because I couldn't put it down. The story literally had me captivated. Most of this book was about trying to find peace within oneself. The bullying that Skye was put through was heart-breaking and I would hate to think someone would ever have to endure that an intense bullying. Also, there were moments in this book that took you back to when Skye and Jesse were 13. And one or two times of Skye and Luka. What I would have liked was to see those past explanations in italics or a different font so I knew when she was going back. Other than that the plot was really worth reading.

Romance:

The romance was okay, though it took me awhile to adjust to Skye and Jesse's relationship. They definitely didn't click right away after being apart for 3 years. Jesse was more aloof and standoffish and Skye was more apprehensive. But as the story progressed the two formed and from there things went in their own direction. So yes there's romance and yes I'm glad there wasn't really a love triangle (thank goodness!!) but I still hated how Jesse treated Skye in the beginning. If you love someone you don't treat them the way he treated her at first (and yes I know the history!).

Characters:

I liked Skye, she was the main protagonist. She had a lot on her plate and considering what she had to endure she was really strong. If it were me I'd hate to think what it would've done to me. Jesse was an unlikable character but by the end I was satisfied with him, just wished I could've of liked him a bit more. Skye's mom didn't make an appearance really (maybe at the end?). She was a weak character to me and I think if the author would've made her stronger maybe things could've been different. Aunt Mae was interesting but she fell kind of flat to me. Some of the other characters were well placed but there's too many to name. The characters were pretty well thought out to me. I could really feel what they were feeling.

Transformation of the Character:

Skye definitely transformed in this book. She changed from some taking crap to wanting to put it all behind her and stand strong. I really loved seeing her transformation because it gave hope to all of us. Jesse transformed in this book too. I liked seeing him become someone I didn't despise. Aunt Mae did some transforming herself, though her's was less noticeable. But she changed from a distracted character to someone who was worth looking at. She kind of was uncaring in an uncanny way. Not in a way of not loving Skye but one overlooking the little details.

Description:

I loved the description in this book. I loved the eerie way the author allowed us to feel as she described some scenes. It gave the book a chilled way that really allowed the reader to feel on edge but feel safe at the same time. Ms. Armstrong had a way with words when it came to describing Skye's emotions. The bullying was betrayed realistically and so emotionally that for a moment I forgot it wasn't real. The mystery was written in a way that allowed the reader to keep guessing who was the real person behind each threat. For one moment you were sure it was this person but in the end it totally ended up being someone unexpected. So the description definitely was portrayed perfectly in this book.

Style:

This was written in first person and in two POV's (point of views). This being written in first person allowed the author to really dig deeper into Skye and Jesse's psych. I loved being in their mind and exploring their thought processes. Skye's especially allowed me to know how it felt to be on the edge of everything you loved but not being able to touch it. This being in Skye and Jesse's point of view allowed the reader to go back and forth to see different views of the story itself. I thought it was an excellent idea to use these two main characters. They really allowed the story to expand. I loved the author's writing too. This isn't my first book by Ms. Armstrong. She has a way with words that really allows the reader to get attached to the story-line and characters.

Quote of the Book: (This is an ARC this is subject to change, but let's hope not!)

"I see their expressions, and I crumple to the floor. I hear this scream, this terrible scream, and I realize it's coming from me."

Last Thoughts:

This was a fantastic read; one of my favorites by the author actually. So many feels and moments on the edge of my seat. This had me guessing till the very end. Loved the thriller part of it but also the transformation part of it too. This was definitely one thrill ride I loved to ride and sad to see the end. I am definitely looking forward to reading more by this author. I totally recommend that you pre-order this book; you won't be disappointed!!

First Thoughts:

So I didn't know anything about the author going into this book. What got my attention was the premise. I'm always down for a murder mystery. Other than a few issues, the authors writing was intriguing and left you wanting for more. If you're wanting a mystery that leaves you guessing until the very end and even then leaves you on the edge of your seat, this is the book for you. Apparently this book is a spin-off series from her series Virtual Falls. And after reading this book, I just might go and check it out myself; I call myself intrigued.

Goodreads Summary:

I have three confessions to make:

1. I've got the scar of a gunshot on my forehead.
2. I don't remember an entire year of my life.
3. My name is Kellen Adams...and that's half a lie.

Girl running...from a year she can't remember, from a husband she prays is dead, from homelessness and fear. Tough, capable Kellen Adams takes a job as assistant manager of a remote vacation resort on the North Pacific Coast. There amid the towering storms and the lashing waves, she hopes to find sanctuary. But when she discovers a woman's dead and mutilated body, she's soon trying to keep her own secrets while investigating first one murder...then another.

Now every guest and employee is a suspect. Every friendly face a mask. Every kind word a lie. Kellen's driven to defend her job, her friends and the place she's come to call home. Yet she wonders--with the scar of a gunshot on her forehead and amnesia that leaves her unsure of her own past--could the killer be staring her in the face?

Plot:

Like I mentioned above, this book pretty much had a lot of mystery to it and I didn't even guess the correct killer until right before he/she was revealed. There was one part of the book I didn't particularly like or enjoy. Ms.Dobb had put descriptions of the people the main character Kellen met. Like, she would put what the person looked like and then, Kellen's perception of them. It was all put in a separate paragraph and in different font (I think?). It was like a military perception of what she thought, which makes sense for her character but all it did for me as a reader was irritate me. It distracted me from the story and I can understand the need for it (it is a mystery after all) but I would've preferred the story without it. Let me make my own assumptions please! Other than that the story moved quickly, there was always something happening; someone need saving. I read this in a couple of sittings but that was only because of my life. This is definitely a book in my opinion that can be read in one sitting (it's that good).

Romance:

Here we are again at the dreaded love triangle. I'm really not liking a woman/man being in love with more than one person. Though I wouldn't go as deep as love for both men in this story, the possibility was there none the less The romance also didn't really come into play until halfway through the book. Yes we were introduced to Kellen's husband in the beginning but he let's just say wasn't lovable (he doesn't count in my opinion.). By the end of the book I'm still not sure about the romance, it's still kind of iffy. But I guess that's why it's a series. We get to explore it further in future books.

Characters:

Kellen is a likable character. She appears one way and by the end of the book she's someone else. I liked that she was a strong character who wouldn't take crap from anyone. I got to see an insight of her from before but most of the book it's her in the present dealing with both a murder mystery and a past. Birdie was one of my favorite characters, she has a bit of mystery to her but she's spunky too. Max was a character introduced later on in the story and though I learned a little bit about him but I wish I knew more. Mara was an interesting character and played a big role in this book too but I won't go into too much detail. As for the other characters they were good too but those characters I didn't get too attached to them.

Transformation of Character:

Kellen definitely transformed in this book. She was this weak and fragile character and by the end she was someone else entirely. Someone worth supporting and rooting for. I can't wait to see how much more she'll change as the series progresses. Nil another important character in the book transformed too, he became some less mysterious and more intriguing by the end of the book. Of course there were others transformed but I don't want to get into too much detail in fear of spoiling the book for you.

Description:

I liked the description of the hotel that most of the book took place at. It was like I could visualize where everything was and tell when something wasn't right. Also the description of the deaths was minimal. Though the first murder remains was a little too descriptive for my taste but I understand we had to get the killers MO right before we could understand the later murders. The author described Kellen's emotions very well. I could really understand what she was going through and how she felt, it was that descriptive. I could also sense the fear coming from the other characters as this mystery unfolded.

Style:

This was written in third person and in multiple POV's (Point of views). Though this was written mostly in Kellen's POV. I can see the need with other point's of views so I really didn't have a problem with that. The third person usuage was good and allowed the reader to get a different view but I kind of wonder if the author would've used first person that it would've been better. Maybe if it was in first person, I could've even got a better grasp on Kellen because yes she herself was mystery. But we were still able to connect with Kellen so maybe third person was the best? Also there was flashbacks that was written in italics and allowed the reader to better understand Kellen. The first scene which was in Priscilla's POV was the only scene I seemed to be confused on at first...I would definitely consider re-writing it? Though not sure how to make it better. I did like the author's writing itself, it is distinctive and fun and flowed smoothly.

Quote of the Book:

"He lifted his greasy hands and wiggled them. "Admit it. You want me. You love me."

"I do love you," Kellen said. "Like a disgusting, loud, gross younger brother who deserves to have his head stuck in a toilet and flushed.""

Last Thoughts:

Though there were a few things I didn't particularly care for in this book I really did enjoy it. I definitely want to read the rest of the series. And the ending?! Definitely a twist I didn't see coming which makes me like this book even more. It took me on a ride of twists and turns and by the time the rollercoaster ended I was left stunned and speechless. So go out and discover this book for yourself! I would love to hear your own opinions of it, so drop on by and tell me yourself! I would love to hear from you!

Number of Pages: 368

Warning! This is the second and last book in the series! If you haven't read "Select" the first book in the series proceed with caution!

First Thoughts:

I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to jump back into this world so easily. It was like I hadn't even left it at all. Granted it was just last January when I read the first book! So not too long ago but I've read quite a many books since then, so this really was a pleasant surprise. So much happened in this book and I was sad to see it end. I've been reading books that are just part of a duo-logy lately and it's making me sad. I kind of want to read more with the same characters and their world. I feel like this book could offer so much more. Like the author could perhaps sprout a prequel (Please?!). Ugh! So much to say about this book so lets get started!

Goodreads Summary:

After rejecting the cult-like influence of her father's family, Julia moves into a fancy hotel in downtown Austin. But she finds herself alone except for her boyfriend, Jonn--and her fears. Once again she's suppressing her abilities, afraid her family will come for John when they find out he's been developing abilities of his own in her presence. The FBI is also keeping a close eye on Julia hoping she can lead them to her father, Novak, as he's wanted for questioning in his former assistant's death.

With tensions high, Julia and John agree to go separate ways for the summer, paving the way for Julia to reunite with Angus, fellow outcast. Together they set out on a road trip to California to find Julia's mom and a way into Novak's secret underground world. Along the way Julia will learn the Puri perhaps aren't the only humans evolving into something different...and that maybe she's the leader her people have needed all along.

Plot:

This story picked back up from the first book though it was the beginning of summer where it picked back up. This book took me only a few sittings to finish it. Though it was slow at a few points it always picked back up. A lot of the questions that were asked in the first book were answered in this book. I do recommend that if you haven't read the first book that you read that one first because you definitely won't be as invested in this book as if you'd had. Plus you will be confused on what's happening in this story and not know what's going on and why the characters are reacting the way they are. I liked that this book was creative in a way that created a new type of human; a more advanced one. And there were definitely lots of twists and turns but was predictable at some points. But the book never made me want to put down the book and start another one. I was immersed in another world and was taken along with the characters and the dramatics of the story. Definitely a great book to read if you're looking for something different. Though this story is in a way similar to those with paranormal powers it made it different in a way that isn't like your typical story.

Romance:

Okay this was one area of the book where I had a few problems. First I never really liked the whole love triangle. I mean pick your love already! It doesn't have to be complicated. I mean come on! Stick with the person your heart desires, it's kind of hard to love two people so completely like Julia did. And I was really rooting for John...he's so perfect for her! And the whole picture where Angus comes and tries to steal Julia's heart? Yeah not liking it. Won't tell you who she chooses but be prepared for some ups and downs!

Characters:

Julia is the main character in the story and she is pretty much a strong heroine. Though there is a few points I kind want to punch her for the decisions she makes. I mean come on don't be that stupid! But other than that she really is a strong person for all that's she's been though. I mean losing your family maybe not in death but losing them all the same is still hard. She has to deal with suppressing her powers which is painful physically but also emotionally. Also John and Angus were the co-stars in this book. At one point I really hated Angus and by the end I was satisfied with him. John made me a little upset but other than that he really added to the story.  As for the minor characters like Angus's old gang and others of their kind they kind of just were flat not really adding or subtracting from the story.

Transformation of Character:

Julia changed a little overall but not as much as I would have liked to seen. Other than a few tweaks to her personality she pretty much stayed the same. Actually Liv kind of did some transformation of her own. At the end she really did surprise me. Don't want to spoil the story so I'll just leave her at that.I kind think Julia's stepmother did more transformation than Julia, but it was still a good addition to the story just not what I would've liked to see.

Description:

Loved the description in the book. The author had a great way of describing certain scenes in the book. I was actually quite surprised. I actually thought the description in this book was better than the first. I was really able to see each place the characters visited, especially Julia and Angus's road trip adventure. And towards the ending one place especially was described excellent, really allowed me to picture it and get a good idea on the development of the story. And description on how the characters were feeling was awesome too. I really got a good grasp on the minds of both Julia and John. They both had a complex thinking process when it came time to grasping what was happening to them.

Style:

This was written in first person and was mainly written in one POV(point of view). I say mainly because in the first half of the book you see some scenes written in John's POV while most of the story is written in Julia's POV. And John 's POV was short compared to Julia's but it still had so much emotion attached to it, so much insight that wasn't revealed until the end. The book format was really well thought out and the way John's POV was placed was perfect that by the end it made the story that much more special and easier to understand. I liked the author's writing itself, kept me intrigued and easy to read. This is definitely in prose format and allowed the book to flow more smoothly.

Quote of the Book:

""That's who I was." I dangled the necklace over the drawer of my beside table, lowering it gently, then closing it back in the dark. "I have to stop. It's too dangerous to be different.""

Last Thoughts:

This book took me on a ride of a lifetime that left me gasping for air and left me with little to no sleep. I really enjoyed this book and was sad to see it end. I really do think there's way more stories this world could create so I wouldn't be surprised to see the author do a prequel. But if she doesn't this book still left me satisfied. And can I not mention the cover of this book?! It's amazing one of my favorite covers of the year so far; absolutely gorgeous! So dear readers be on the look out for this book when it comes out this October! And if you haven't read the first one go buy it and be prepared for a trip of a lifetime! You'll have plenty of time to read the first book before diving into "Select Few"!
